In the 3rd quarter 2015 issue of Lines South, a publication of the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line Railroads Historical Society, Mr. Doug Riddell has an excellent article about the CQ23-7s. He mentions that 3003 was the only BQ23-7 to be painted in the Bright Future paint scheme. Here's 3003 in that scheme at Fairfax, SC in 1991. It's in charge of a long freight running from Columbia, SC to Savannah, Ga. on the former Seaboard Air Line route, now the S line. The curved track in the foreground connects the S line with the Augusta sub route. |

3291 is at Orangeburg, SC in 1992. The mainline to the left of 3291 now runs from Cope, SC to Sumter, SC. Originally the line ran from Florence, SC to Augusta, Ga. CSX abandoned much of this route in the late 1980s. Sections abandoned included Dunbarton to Cope and Florence to Sumter. At one point, SCL operated 4 through freights a day on this route including a local out of Orangeburg. The train numbers were 129, 130, 277 and 278. Prior to Amtrak, SCL ran an east and west bound local type passenger train along this route too. |
